More Than a Walk: Our Family's Light the Night Story

How a family journey, a little creativity and a community of supporters became part of the story behind Busybee Creates.

Some traditions begin with celebrations. Others begin with experiences that change your life forever.

For our family, Light the Night is one of those traditions.

Every autumn, as the evenings grow darker, families, friends and communities gather with illuminated lanterns. Some walk to celebrate survival. Others walk in remembrance. And many walk to show support for someone they love.

For us, it's personal.

It's a reminder of where we've been, the people who have walked alongside us, and why we continue to give back.

Where Our Story Began

Our family's connection to blood cancer began in 2013, when Karl's journey with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) led to a stem cell transplant.

It was a life-changing chapter for our family—one that gave us a deeper appreciation for the importance of medical research, compassionate care and the support of people around us.

That same year, our family began fundraising through Light the Night.

What started as a way to give back also inspired a little creative project between mother and daughter. We made things, shared them with our community and found ways to turn creativity into fundraising.

That small beginning eventually grew into Busybee Creates.

Over the years, the business has evolved, but the reason behind those early efforts has stayed with us.

Creativity can bring people together. And even small contributions can become part of something much bigger.

Why We Continue to Walk

Light the Night, organized by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada, brings communities together to support people affected by blood cancers.

The funds raised help advance research, improve treatment options and provide resources for patients and their families.

But beyond the fundraising, there's something especially meaningful about being surrounded by people who understand what this journey can mean.

Each lantern tells a story.

  • White represents those diagnosed with blood cancer, including survivors and people in remission.

  • Red represents those walking in support and solidarity.

  • Gold represents those walking in memory of someone they've lost.

Together, they create a beautiful reminder of hope, resilience and community.

For our family, returning year after year is a way to honour our journey while supporting others who are navigating their own.

A New Generation Carrying the Light

This year, we're especially proud to share that Team Knight (Chua) is being led by Kenzo Chua.

What began as a family commitment continues with the next generation stepping forward.

Through Team Knight, Kenzo is helping raise awareness and funds for the blood cancer community.

It's meaningful to see something that has been part of our family's story for so many years continue through our children.

Last year, Kenzo's fundraising efforts and supporters helped raise more than $5,000. This year, he's continuing that commitment with a personal fundraising goal of $2,000.

Every donation, every shared message and every person who joins the walk helps keep that spirit of support alive.

More Than a Small Business

Busybee Creates has grown beyond the little fundraising project that helped start it all.

Today, we create gifts, personalized products and everyday items meant to bring a little joy into people's lives.

But we haven't forgotten those beginnings.

Supporting Light the Night each year is one way we stay connected to our story and to the community that has supported us along the way.

We've often shared our belief in celebrating the little things and finding meaningful ways to show appreciation.

For our family, Light the Night is one of those ways we turn appreciation into action.

It's a tradition of remembering, supporting and looking forward with hope.

To everyone who has donated, walked with us, shared our fundraising efforts or supported Busybee Creates over the years: thank you for being part of our story.

And to every family navigating a blood cancer journey, we're walking alongside you.

Celebrate Everyday. Intentionally.

With gratitude,
The Busybee Creates Family
